Does this mean in the current setup on a serial console with d-i other
languages than English are not possible by design? That would perhaps
explain why d-i crashes when selecting anything else than English in
languagechooser.

Is there no way to display the UTF-8 templates on an iso-8859-1-capable
display? That should at least be possible for languages whose character
set can be displayed in iso-8859-1, for example English, German, French,
Dutch, Italian, Spanish (and probably some more). Is there some kind
of conversion function UTF-8 -> iso-8859-1 available inside d-i?
