How about just exiting the gtk framebuffer process, which would drop
the user into a shell?

How about just bringing up a dialog with a big, scrollable, static
text widget when they want to see "the current state of the log". It
would make them stop what they're doing and bring up a dialog with the
log. Is that unusable?
