I have now tried both "safe" and "idepci" flavors with the same results.
Furthermore, with the idepci flavor I have tried some boot parameter
arguments as suggested in the help

boot: linux oapic aic7xxx=no_probe

with the same results. I have typed the final several lines of the
error below.

Can anyone help!?!?

VFS: Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM disk and press ENTER
request_module[block-major-2]: Root fs not mounted
apm: BIOS not found.
VFS: Cannot open root device 02:00
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 02:00
