Package: boot-floppies
Version: 3.0.21; reported 2002-03-21
Severity: normal

I was installing on an m68k (Quadra 650). I downloaded macinstall.tar.gz
and unpacked it, then started the Penguin installer. Everything worked great until
I selected to install the Kernel and Modules. It located the folder on my disk
where I had unpacked the tarball, and installed rescue.bin. But then it came up
with the message

There was a problem installing the drivers from /instmnt/3.0.21/mac/drivers.tgz.

I verified the file was there, then checked vc3.

loop: can't get info on /dev/loop0: No such device or address
Segmentation fault
Extracting drivers from non-floppy device /instmnt/3.0.21/mac/drivers.tgz
failed with 1

Thanks for the help!

The zcat gives me:

zcat: invalid compressed data--format violated
zcat: invalid compressed data--crc error
zcat: invalid compressed data--length error

ls -l shows drivers.tgz is 1102801, dtd 3/18

So I used wget to download drivers.tgz directly from the archive,
it showed the same size on ls -l, but gave no errors upon
extraction.

Next I tried re-extracting the macinstall.tgz I had downloaded
earlier which was the original source of the drivers.tgz. That
failed with the same errors.

I downloaded that directly, and again it showed the same size.
That one gave me a very pretty *** BUS ERROR ***
BAD KERNEL TRAP with a stack and call trace, then a segfault.

I then tried downloading and extracting it on my regular powerpc
machine, and no problem there.

Back on the m68k, the disk had run out of space. I tried to
free up some space, but doing a rm -rf foldername got me a
kernel panic: Freeing swap page. This is about the third time
I've seen that error on this machine. I think maybe my machine
and the linux m68k kernel don't get along.

I booted back up, and the external SCSI I am installing on didn't
mount. Ah hah! the SCSI connector was loose on one side. That
would explain a lot.

Well, I couldn't get the machine to boot back into Linux after fixing
the connector. I give up for tonight.

But apparently, this was a hardware problem, so I'm closing the bug.
