when the kernel is passed the console=ttyS0 option, the kernel boot
messages are properly sent to the console.
however, the language choose shows up on the first virtual console, and
the keyboard is non-responsive.
the /boot/debian/kernel and /boot/debian/root.bin were taken from
resc2880reiserfs.bin
from /boot/grub/menu.lst:
