Okay, yeah, I see what you mean.  I built some single-language French disks
and they exhibit the same problem.

Bogl-bterm isn't used at all in the non-LC case.  It does seem like it has
to be some kind of newt and/or slang oddity.  If I manually replace the
(UTF8) libslang and libnewt libraries on the root disk with the (non-UTF8 I 
think) versions from /usr/lib on my computer, accented characters start 
working again.

I'm also seeing bizarre effects with dialog box borders: sometimes I get 
none at all, sometimes I get the "ASCII" borders made up of +---+ signs, 
and sometimes I get the spiffy borders made with line drawing characters.
Replacing the newt and slang libraries doesn't seem to have made any
difference to this one.

Do you have the -utf8 versions of newt and slang installed, or the vanilla
ones?
