Bug#114926: Using a 2.4 kernel produces panic while loading the root floppy.

I am trying to install a machine that requires a 2.4 kernel
in order to boot, but trying to use a 2.4 kernel (I've tried
with several 2.4 versions and configurations) following the
instructions found in the README file produces a kernel
panic after inserting the root floppy and pressing ENTER.

I've tried with different versions of the kernel 2.4 (2.4.2, 
2.4.7 and 2.4.10) on different machines, and several 
floppies. 

I wonder if the information given in the README file of 
rescue.bin has to be modified to include support for 2.4 
kernels :-?
