Are you sure? The nature of the bug was when you tried to configure
PCMCIA twice in dbootstrap (unusual, but still a bug). The part of
the code, as I recall, wasn't really unloading everything properly,
thus the problem when you did it the 2nd time.

Really? That's odd -- a hard freeze? Did you have any NFS mounts?
We should try to track this down.
