Russian PDF ?

Here are some excerpts from my attempt to build the Russian PDF:

  Language: russianb 1999/04/05 v1.1j Russian support from the babel system

  Package babel Warning: No hyphenation patterns were loaded for
  (babel)                the language `Russian'
  (babel) I will use the patterns loaded for \language=0 instead.

  \l@russian = a dialect from \language0
  (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/cyrillic/t2aenc.def
  File: t2aenc.def 1999/01/07 v1.0 Cyrillic encoding definition file

  ! LaTeX Error: Encoding scheme `' unknown.
   [..]
  l.29 ...titution{\LastDeclaredEncoding}{cmr}{m}{n}

   [..]

  l.47 \begin{document}

  The system maintainer forgot to specify a suitable substitution font shape usin
  g the DeclareErrorFont command

  LaTeX Font Info: Try loading font information for T1+ptm on input line 47.
  (/usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/psnfss/t1ptm.fd
  File: t1ptm.fd 1998/07/06 Fontinst v1.800 font definitions for T1/ptm.
  )
  LaTeX Font Info: Try loading font information for T2A+ptm on input line 47.
  LaTeX Font Info: No file T2Aptm.fd. on input line 47.

  LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `T2A/ptm/m/n' undefined
  (Font) using `T2A/cmr/m/n' instead on input line 47.

Then, tons and tons of:

  ! LaTeX Error: Command \cyrch unavailable in encoding T2A.

Culminating in:

  (That makes 100 errors; please try again.)

I've disabled Russian PDF for now. Any help appreciated.
