To: submit@bugs.debian.org
X-Mailer: bug 3.3.2

Package: boot-floppies
Version: N/A
Severity: grave

As it seems the debian boot disks for alpha are using a ext2fs with the
new features introduced in kernel 2.2 turned on. This makes it unable to
load or boot from this disk using a older MILO. The original MILO images
from digital.com are based on 2.0.36 and cannot read this disk. People
using MILO from flash (like me) cannot easily load a newer MILO, because
the available fail safe boot floppies contains an old MILO as well.

After i made a new disk with the features explicit turned off and copied
the files from the debian boot disk to my new boot disk, i was able to
boot as normal.

I don't see any reason why the bootdisks are built with this feature on.

I will not accept bug reports that do not give the version of
boot-floppies that they relate to.

Actually the problem is that it uses 4K blocks on larger disks.

I put in a fix for this in 2.2.10 or 2.2.11 (I can't quite remember
which). Since you didn't give a version number in your bug report
there is no way for me to verify whether it is really fixed in all
cases (I tested it on a Miata with MILO and it seemed to work).

Therefore I will just close the bug. If you try the latest uploaded
version of boot-floppies (2.2.12-2000-04-26) and it still exists, then
you can file another bug.
