This is a known problem with the syslinux shipped with slink.  There
are workarounds:

  - take a newer syslinux (i.e., from potato) and a slink rescue disk,
    and replace the syslinux stuff ont he boot disk (it's just a DOS
    floppy)

  - use ldlinux and install from DOS

  - use potato boot-floppies -- I don't know if it would work to use
    potato boot-floppies to install slink
