How come it has to be like vi ?

It just has to be a small easy to use editor that can perform basic file
editing and is usable to everyone.

I think the advantages of ae and nano as a simple editor for boot
floppies is that they display the basic keystrokes required for usage on
the screen, cosmetically i prefer nano in this regard as the ae screen
layout takes 10 rows to display usage info, whereas nano is only 3.

The reason i like nano's functionality is that the basic keystrokes are
simpler, all of nano's commands are just one control key sequence,
rather than ae's one, two or three, and vi has a separate command mode
altogether, new users would find it very difficult to edit a file with
vi if they don't know how to change between command mode and edit mode.

Its only ever going to be lightly used, you want something that you can
quickly fire up and make changes without having to read a manual.

Try it
