Subject: Debian 2.1-r0 (slink) Install bus problem on SPARC2
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Package: Debian install (CD)
Version: 2.1 r0 (sparc)

Using an external Sun (Sony) CD drive (in a small Sun pizza box)
attached to a SPARCstation 2, I get the following errors when booting
the 1st of two Debian 2.1 install CD's:

esp0: disconnect, resetting bus
esp0: Resetting scsi bus
esp0: SCSI bus reset interrupt
esp0: SCSI bus reset interrupt
..
..(same four lines repeat endlessly)..

This immediately follows what looks like normal Linux bootup messages
(starting with the penguin logo showing a kernel 2.0.35 build used on
the CD) up to the lines describing the detection of two Seagate disk
drives and the CD-ROM drive with no scsi address conflicts. Earlier in
the messages the following is also seen:

esp0: IRQ 3 SCSI ID 7 Clk 20 Mhz CCF=4 TOut 167 NCR53C90A (esp100a)
ESP: Total of 1 ESP hosts found, 1 actually in use
scsi0: Sparc ESP100A (NCR53C90A)
.
.
Someone suggested this has to do with no driver support for (some of)
the hardware, but I'm not certain. I'm going to try creating boot
floppies from the cd directories, but I thought I'd file this meantime
to see if anyone can suggest an alternate way to successfully install
from the cd as per the instructions.

We believe that the bug you reported has been fixed in the potato
boot-floppies, such as version 2.2.8 or higher.

Note that many boot problems are fixed in 2.2.8 since they use the 2.2
kernels. There are many additional flavors of kernels for i386 as
well.

In some cases, bugs are closed due to lack of feedback from the user.

Many problems are also fixed by the inclusion of new packages from
Potato, such as makedev, modconf, etc.

The management of the boot sector has also changed, which solves many
problems.

We encourage you to test the potato boot-floppies on your system. If
your problem persists, please either respond to debian-boot and CC
your original bug and we will reopen the bug, or else submit a new bug
against the boot-floppies package.

Thanks so much for helping to improve the debian installation system.
