pre-2.2.9 next menu choice problem

Ok, I'm new at this, but here goes ...

I did a test install with the pre-2.2.9 i386 boot disks.  The next
option in the install menu changed properly until after I had installed
the kernel and drivers from floppy.  After that task completed
successfully, the system didn't recognize that the kernel and drivers
had been installed.  The next menu choice stayed on the install
operating system and drivers choice, no matter what else I did.  Has
anyone else experienced this?
