some problems
I just tried building boot-floppies with today's version from CVS. I
first installed the package in order to get any other required
packages.
Can anyone help me with the problems I had? I don't think I changed
anything significant in the files apart from the file paths in config.
All the debs came from potato recently; I didn't even have my slink CD
mounted.
(1) There seem to be missing dependencies on (sufficiently recent)
e2fsprogs, makedev and recode.
(2) "make check" doesn't tell you about missing kernel-image*.debs.
(3) In rootdisk.sh, $charset is undefined, so recode gets invoked with
the argument "..ibmpc". According to the man page, this means recode
translates from DEFAULT_CHARSET. This environment variable doesn't
seem to get set, either, so it means that the behaviour depends on its
value in the original environment where you typed "make", I think.
Surely this isn't the intention. Have I misunderstood it, or how is it
supposed to work?
(4) Is root.bin ever supposed to fit on the same floppy with the
kernel these days?
(5) I built a resc1440.bin and a root1440.bin that booted. (Is there a
note somewhere about the other resc*.bin?) But there's something wrong
with the display. In particular, the box that contains the scrolling
menu of things to do next has its right and bottom borders missing.
(6) With LINGUA=eo there was even worse damage to the display, with
the last character cell in a line changing from grey to black as you
moved up and down the menu. Also, the non-ascii chars were wrong. This
is perhaps just a font problem; I mention it only for completeness.
