Bug#58390: depmod: error reading ELF header: No such file or directory during installation

Package: boot-floppies
Version: 2.2.7

If I choose Configure Device Driver Modules from the installation menu after
loading the
driver-x.bin images (disks-1.44) and then switch to tty3 before the system
detects modules, the Select Category screen is drawn on tty3, and I get the
following message on tty3:

user.info.dbootstrap[PID]: depmod: error reading ELF header: No such file or
directory

Under certain (and yet unknown) circumstances it is possible to go on with
the installation aftewards with tty3 messed up, but in the majority of the
cases the whole install process is stuck and all keyboard input including
ESC (^[[) appears on tty3 and only there and only those which were entered
while tty3 was visible.

The machine that I want to install potato on is a HP NetServer 5/66 LC.
