Following up to myself:
I just tried feb16 boot floppies - It still doesnt work when i choose
pcmcia configure when i get it as the alternative to "Configure drivers".
It seems that the "Configure modules" sets the link and not the
drivers unpacking. So the modules are available only after the "Configure
drivers/modules" ...
This is what i get in the logfile when trying to configure pcmcia in
the first pass:

lable
daemon.info cardmgr[88]: module /lib/modules/2.2.14/pcmcia/serial_cs.o not avail
able
daemon.info cardmgr[88]: get dev info on socket 1 failed Resource temporarily un
available
Configure "modules" aka "drivers" afterwards (just exit) and afterwards
try to configure pcmcia again works.
