Bug#57476: when prompting for password, should emit '*' or some acknowledgment of keystroke

Yes, but I would love to see the interface changed so that it does not
look like it is expecting to print out something.  Neither Joey nor I
could think of a way to do that, though.  UI suggestions anyone?
