At 6:30PM Pacific time, debian reports  it is 10:30PM PST.  

I can not construct a scenario for this report, since the time difference
to UTC is 8 hours!

On initial install I said that the system clock was keeping local time, and
selected the Pacific time zone.

ASUS P5A motherboard, AMD K6-2/400 chip.  Co-existing with various MS OS's.
