Not difficult at all, is it, Stephane?

I agree that xdm should not be part of the standard profile.  Removing
xdm from standard X11 installations was one of the reasons Branden did
the great X11 re-org in the first place, IIRC.

I suggest you open an important bug against boot-floppies and that we
get this fixed in in 2.1.9.  We need to do a 2.1.9 anyway for
documentation updates.
