Hmmm...  This is kinda outside of my expertise, but I've noticed some
wierd stuff on the 2.1.5 root disks. It must just be something I don't
understand, or sparse files or something.

/mnt is the loop mounted root.bin:

root@burrito:/tmp# ls -l /mnt/bin/zcat /bin/zcat
-rwxr-xr-x   4 root     root        44924 Jan 22 13:00 /bin/zcat
-rwxr-xr-x  43 root     root       150012 Jan 21 07:14 /mnt/bin/zcat
root@burrito:/tmp# ls -l zcat.*
