The problem must almost definitely have been caused by a hardware failure,
most probably by broken hardware. We could eliminate the problem by
replacing the Soyo mainboard with an Asus one. Since then, I neither have
seen any sort of this bug again nor used any Soyo mainboard again. Think
yourself about coincedence... ;-)
So, the bug seemed not to be Debian related, perhaps it would not have
happened with newer kernels, so I would not say anything against closing.
