Subject: Cannot initialize partition during install

I just tried to install Debian slink - i.e. the soon to be 2.1.
The machine boots fine and the installation program starts. I'm allowed to
choose keyboardlayout and activate a swappartition. The next step after
activating the swap is to initialize a Linux partition or alternatively
mount an already initialized partition. The swappartion in my case is
/dev/hdc2 and I would like install debian on /dev/hdc3. I have had another
distribution on /dev/hdc3 before (and I wanted it to be replaced with
Debian).

I cannot Initialize a partition nor mount an already existing
partition. I have a libc5 based Linux installed on my first harddrive and
using that I can easily mount /dev/hdc3 (and /dev/hdc4 for that matter - I
plan to use /dev/hdc4 as /usr). When I try either option in the
installation program it goes back to the screen where you choose color or
monochrom installation. After presenting an infodisplay the
installationprogram again suggests:

Next: Initialization of a Linux partition
Alternative: Mount an already initialized partition.

Since none of the above succeeds it is not possible to proceed with the
installation.

Once I managed to mount /dev/hdc4 from an other console and then I was
able to initialize /dev/hdc3 but that time the installation failed on
another place.

I have no problem with mounting the root filesystem manually but I do not
know how to tell that to the installationprogram. I.e I do not know where
the installation program would mount the to-be root partition itself.

The rescue1440.bin image was made 4 december and it was downloaded from
the slink distribution.

I have really no idea how to proceed on this one. Any help is appreciated!

TIA

Johan
