You might do this on your own private box, but if you are working

This is to less reasoning for a person like me that is not really
involved in kernel stuff.  So why do you assume that this will not
work together with a Debian package containing a RT enabled kernel
image?  Have you ever asked (via BTS) for such stuff?

Naturally because Debian won't build modules for our private kernel...

Sure.  I'm not talking about a private kernel but an official
Debian package that shows the features you are needing.
