Or another message passing system for that purpose.

You'd be interested in systems like Distributed Queueing System (DQS)
or GNU Queue obviously for batch processing.

Also, if you are interested in High Availability, hava a look at
VALinux's cluster manager software. Also, Red Hat is improving Piranha
too. It's very easy to find this software. Just look at these
companies' homepages (valinux.com, for redhat take a look at sources.redhat.com)

Aside that, there are many many packages that do some sort of load balancing
for Internet services.

For installation of Solaris, you would like a Kickstart method. Have
a look at Thomas Lange's Fully Automatic Installation. It would
work for Solaris, too.
