backporting iotop-c to oldstable

The situation is as follows:

stable: 1.17-1
stable-pu: 1.17-1+deb11u1 (segfault fix, no security risk, still in new queue)

My question - how to proceed with an oldstable backport:

1. Wait for the stable-pu to get accepted and base it on that
2. Include the stable-pu fix plus a couple of visual improvements and base it
on 1.17-1

I tried to figure out what the proper version should be, but the simplest
working one I could think of is 1.17-1+deb11u1+bpo10+1 in order not to mess the
upgrade paths. Is there a better way?
