Re: New Zen 3 System with RX 5000 GPU

Normally the only thing that can go wrong if you install a totally different kernel is that the new kernel might happen to incorporate a big you happen to trigger.

Updating the graphics packages tends to be more risky, instead, as there are many versioned dependencies there and sometimes there is a reason that one packet requires a packet of a specific version.

Kind regards,

Gunter.

Hi folks,

I recently built a desktop with a Ryzen 5600X and a Sapphire RX 56000 XT. I've tried installing Debian, upgrading to Testing, and then installing the graphics packages three different ways, but I've never been able to get past the display manager. Would it be possible to install the GPU-related packages from backports and kernel 5.9 from Testing? Or will it it not be possible to get Debian running on this machine (with a GUI) until kernel 5.9 makes its way to Stable? I know kernel 5.9 is a bit on the wobbly side, but I really just want to get this desktop "up and running".
