You are using Debian, a GNU distribution providing you with a certain
amount of quality and promises. One of the promises is to keep a
system stable. Users of Debian stable expect to get a working system
that doesn’t change in unpredictable ways for about three to five years
(with LTS, even more with ELTS).

So, please stop thinking in upstream “version” numbers and consider
the greater picture: in Debian, you get things integrated to work well,
and that *does* mean fixing it in the “old” upstream version that is
packaged for stable because people will be using buster in 2022 or so
still, and thus will be getting this specific version (plus our patches).

Debian is more than just a system to compile upstream software unpatched
like some other distributions. This is a deliberate choice (and both are
needed, of course).
