Well if you want to backport chromium you should of course start
with backporting the build-deps first. :) So backports would be the
place to go. OTOH I'm not sure if it's worth the effort. If you
run a state of the art web browser I guess you're running this
on some kind of workstation. So I would follow the advice of the
security team to help testing jessie instead of messing with
the build toolchain.
But in the end that's up to you. If you think it's time well spent
for whatever reason I see no reason to hold you back.
