fglrx: tiffgt vs LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT

I am not able to display any single TIFF image using tiffgt, eg:

$ tiffgt /usr/share/VTKData/Data/beach.tif

The only solution to get tifftg to display something is:

$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 tiffgt /usr/share/VTKData/Data/beach.tif


I am using:

$ apt-cache policy fglrx-driver
