LibreOffice by default selects US Letter to be the format to use for printing. Every other program selects A4 correctly as configured in /etc/papersize. The problem is that there needs to be a system-wide method of selecting a default paper size and a user-specific method such that users can override system settings when they want.
Apparently LO "lost" the cals to paperconf and thus lost reading papersize.
Actually, not, it just moved into i18nutil:

So, do you have libpaper-utils installed? That one contains "paperconf".

Yes, I have it installed. Your suggestions seem to have helped for which I thank you, but these things should work out of the box. There are a large number of heuristics that could be used to to figure out which paper format is likely desired by the user as a default. The UI could also reflect a checkmark somewhere saying that this format should be in the future with an additional piece of information for people in the admin group saying that this can be configured system wide in the way you described.

There are just so many ways to solve it that it boggles the mind that something as simple as printing a document, something which worked in Microsoft Word97 (that's 15 years ago (!)) still doesn't work on Debian.

Some developer from LibreOffice is hereby invited to explain how they managed to get into that situation. For Debian about the same thing holds: how can you release something in this state?

Lack of developers is not an excuse, since Debian can also opt for not packaging LibreOffice and thereby acting as a filter of quality and via that way communicate to the world that LibreOffice isn't worth the time to look at. I have no problems with you shipping crap (because that's what it is) in the unstable distribution, but stable should have higher quality software, because it is meant as a production system as opposed to testing/unstable/experimental.

If somehow you (as in whoever reads this) think that printing not working out of the box does not mean it is a piece of crap, then the conversation is over, since that just means you are out of touch with reality.

Also, please do not point out that this libreoffice is a backported package, because openoffice is broken in yet another way to which the exact same arguments apply. If you had any plans of writing that particular response, just mark yourself too as useless in this discussion.

Use MS office with Wine... that works better. I tend to think it'll take 2 to 3 years to for libreoffice to be *usable*. The PM doesn't have to do anything with it.

You want a better e.g., see KDE.
