Re: how to make sure that Squeeze stays Squeeze?

Hi folks,

Which packages should _not_ be backported to Squeeze and pushed
to backports.debian.org?
Any backport has to be explicitly selected by the admin of the box
concerned before it can be installed, therefore, any package can be
backported (subject to it being worth the effort in opinion of whoever
does the work).
Without doing research on the backports site and perhaps a bit
off topic.

I remember that I've read on the backports site that a criterion
should be the user base. If your package has a high popcon
ranking, ask for one.

If nobody volunteers, it may be little effort to get your personal
backport:

 - download and install the sources
 - It's a good idea to do the following in chroot environment, if
you *really* need your production system.
 - update the changelog (add an entry indicating that it is your
local package and change the version number accordingly) and
   try to build it
 - If you are lucky, everything is fine now.
 - If you have bad luck, it may become more tricky.
    * If Fortuna thinks you're a good guy, your build fails just
because of missing build depencies. Perhaps after
      installing them everything is fine.
   * Less fortune: you have to backport build depencies. If
you are lucky again, they just build fine. If they depend
on specific versions, it becomes tricky and at least your
development packages, perhaps also your package
      management may fail to work.

Cheers,
   Martin
