By making sure its sources.list contains the right repos :)

Anyway, that's done using this sequence of commands:

pbuilder create --distribution sarge --mirror http://your.mirror/
pbuilder login --save-after-login

Then edit sources.list, adding a backports.org mirror, and call

pbuilder update

Now you should be able to build packages for backports.org.
