Kopete is definitely working for me with the latest X.org from bpo. So the 
problem is probably elsewhere.
Are you getting the same error messages?
It is strange because kopete does not link libXmu at all. At least the 
version I have does not.

BTW, did you upgrade all your KDE packages (eg. kdebase), or only the ones 
that were pulled by the kopete upgrade?
And also did you log out of KDE after the upgrade?
Because those are the usual problems people run into when doing KDE 
upgrades.
