Since there is a transition freeze effective from 2016-11-05 [1], this
should IMO be addressed ASAP. For the packages under Debian Astro
maintenance, I could offer help here.
Could you specify where you expect the complications?
BTW, I would recommend to put cfitsio under Debian Astro team
maintenance, due to the importance of the package. Would you be willing
to do that?
