I suspect that the usb_modeswitch problem is fixed at its v2.4, but that's only in Jessie backports and crashed the RPi2 I tried to run it on.Well that's impolite of it. Sounds like the thing in the above linked post. Rebuilding the backported jessie version for raspbian (if they don't already have that) should be pretty simple too.
Yes, that's true. I had to do the same with xl2tpd a few days ago because Debian hadn't picked up a new version from upstream. Didn't take any pleasure in it.
