The upstream source tree is, at least in theory since I never tried it,
cross-buildable, so that would be my preferable long-term solution.

Besides I'm not sure for how long we will be able to use this ruby1.8
trick ...  and if that is the case one can always grab a copy of the
ruby1.8 source from archive.d.o for bootstrapping.
