Yes, I did find some posting about resetting the SheevaPlug at power up. Someone determined there was a very smalllll window of opportunity after the power up which was very difficult to hit.

Thank you for all your suggestions. They contribute to increasing my overall knowledge, not only about the PLUG, but Linux to.

I may had same problem with android mail.

I do not see another test to do.

May be a quick reset after power on could help.

I had one of my sheevaplugs with issues like yours.
The only way to get able to talk to it was something like undocumented failsafe recovery.

I just remember playing with reset while power on the sheevaplug.
