I can confirm the procedure you suggested below works on my non-eSATA
Sheevaplug.
uname -a now gives:

Try:
setenv bootargs_console console=ttyS0,115200 ipv6.disable=1
run bootcmd
And when your system boots, make sure to run
flash-kernel
The issue should then be gone.
