Yes - try installing Dropbear SSH server instead (http://matt.ucc.asn.au/dropbear/dropbear.html). It has a much lower memory footprint.

Subject: any replacement for sshd?
is there any replacement for sshd for the slug? I mean, a daemon that
allows the same but has a lower memory footprint.
