In over 35000 downloads of custom nslu2-linux firmware, we have never had a confirmed report of a slug's flash wearing out by flashing firmware (you've got a minimum of 100K erase cycles to work with - calculate how many times you'd need to reflash per day to reach that figure ...).
We've also never had a confirmed report of anyone's bootloader being overwritten when using the recommended tools for flashing custom firmware (i.e. Do *not* use the Linksys "EraseAll" utility, as it does what it's name suggests and has a window of vulnerability where your slug has no valid bootloader).
So I really think your concerns are unwarranted :-)

Thanks a lot for nslu2-utils. I think that most users prefer not to flash the slug too often, just like I. I know that flash EEPROMS cannot stand infinetely many flashes and I know that if I flash something bad then my slug goes to NAS-heaven.
