A 2.2.20 kernel, which I presume is the standard Debian RiscPC compile but
I don't know for sure. (I reverted to that as there's no modules for 2.4 on
this machine).

Changing to a 2.4.18 kernel makes strace work fine (thanx for the clue). Is
strace 2.4/2.2 kernel specific? e.g. it needs to be compiled with the
relevant kernel headers?
