I don't know how pervasive this is, but on the 2.2.13 kernel in the Debian potato release the xserver-fbdev cores if you try to change the resolution to something other than 640x480. If you do a "openvt -c 7 -- fbset -rgba 8,8,8,8" after you change the resolution and before you run X it seems to be ok. It appears that it thinks each pixel element is zero bits if you don't do this. -- Jim Studt, President The Federated Software Group, Inc.
