As apache is a daemon, shouldn't it detach from the terminal where
it was started?

Are you asking a question or are you reporting a bug?
These are mere words: from my point of view, it is a bug.
All other daemons initiated from a terminal (sendmail, smbd,...), are not shown whith a simple 'ps'.

verd:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/apache stop
Stopping web server: apache.
verd:/etc/init.d# /etc/init.d/apache start
Starting web server: apache.
verd:/etc/init.d# ps
 PID TTY TIME CMD
19665 pts/1 00:00:00 bash
21199 pts/1 00:00:00 apache-ssl
21246 pts/1 00:00:00 apache
21252 pts/1 00:00:00 ps
verd:/etc/init.d#

Is this behaviour giving you any problem? apache is detached already from
the terminal otherwise you won't get any prompt back.
The previous behaviour of apache was different.

There are aplications that start and go to background (daemonize), you get the prompt back, but they keep
attached to the terminal, just to send output to it, for example.

I'm just asking for apache going into background and detaching from the terminal too...
