Bug #90606 - Apache taking Resources

Hi,

I seem to have the exact same problem as described in the bugreport, it
always seems to be machines doing Apache (mod_ssl), and always when there is
a sudden load "people browsing" increase. I've looked at the logs and
nothing seems out of the ordinary, when I check the access.log's there is no
single IP hitting me or many hitting one file as in a DoS attack. Symptoms
are the machine increasing in load (I stopped apache at a load of 300 this
morning), I installed daemontool's with softlimit but it still seems to
'spin out'.

It looks much like the 'thundering herd' problem from a few years back but
this is 2.4.x with 4 cpu's, etc. running Debian 3.0 (I've had this issue
since 2.2).

I see Apache 1.3.27 & .28's changelog includes many bugfixes with forking
problems, etc. which MIGHT help with this, but I'm not too willing to try
and see if this is fixed by doing a partial upgrade to unstable (;

Anybody have any ideas (tired fiddling with MaxClients,etc).

Regards,
Francois Botha
