Apache2 + PHP -- doing it ourselves

Hi. I'm a happy user of the apache2 packages in sid.

I've looked through the 2003 archives of this list, plus the apache2,
php3, php4 BTS reports, and the FAQ at php.net. None of them talk about
one another other than a couple of wishlist bugs in php4 ("can we have
apache2 support?" "after 4.3.0 is out"). So I'm guessing that Apache
2.0.x doesn't officially support any version of PHP, since all of the PHP
packages depend on Apache1 rather than permitting Apache2.

While I'd love to learn PHP 4, I'll settle for PHP 3. But that won't
install with Apache 2 either.

Here's my question: if I get either of the php3/php4 source packages,
what would I have to change in order to build my own debs that /don't/
eventually conflict with apache2-common?
