Re: a few dumb questions about wine

Hi Michael

Wine is constantly rolling forward, with releases monthly and more. The
do differentiate between 'stable' and 'development' releases - though in
almost every case the 'development' release is what people are running.
Unfortunately debian tends to stick with the 'stable' release, which is
usually quite dated.

The winehq website includes debian packages for the latest versions,
though the current maintainer is deliberately not providing a repository
so that people have to consciously manually install the packages.

Two pieces of advice.

The first is to read the 'appdb' on winehq, as it will provide details
on how well your program will run. It will also provide tricks and work
arounds.

Secondly, if you get the software running you should either not update
wine (unless forced) or be aware that updating wine will occasionally
(though less and less in the last 3-4 years) introduce regressions - so
you might need to then roll back.

Its worth noting that the wine main branch doesnt accept 'hacks' (though
they accept stubs and placeholders). This is why there isnt much support
for cd-rom 'security' etc, meaning that in many cases you will need to
install disk cracks to the software you want to run.

The guys who write wine also have a commercially supported version
called 'crossover office' and 'crossover games' - which have a list of
software they support. These both include hacks to make the softwares
work, and they regression test each release. Revenue from these two
products funds much of wine's development. Oh and they have a free
trial, so you can see if your program works before shelling out any real
money.

I am not associated with these product, nor do i use them, nor am i
endorsing them - i am just pointing out their existence. I do use the
open source wine to play lots of games, and am reasonably familiar with
the dark arts required to occasionally to get windows software running
on linux.
