Okay, I got it! I downloaded the kernel source from
www.kernel.org, built it using dpkg, installed it,
rebooted, and my drive showed up as /dev/sda. Next I
partitioned it with fdisk and finally mounted it
successfully.
Thanks for all the ideas. I am on a steep learning
curve. Each problem takes one full day to resolve.
Next on the agenda is my sound card.
