I used to have this problem on my 32-bit Athlon system. It's a real
nuisance in etch, so most of the time I just run sarge, which does not
exhibit the problem.
I say used to, because now my etch only boots properly about a quarter
of the time. I suspect file system damage from one of the freezes.
