I don't use thunderbird but it certainly starts ok on my AMD64.

I *do* use it regularly ;-) and it works perfect here.
One difference I see is that some packages are more recent on my
system, see list below. Maybe it is a library incompatibility ...

My thunderbird works perfectly on AMD64 and my library difference between my system and the bug report exactly match this report from Andreas, with the exception that I don't have the German dictionaries installed.
